With today's new electronic safe locks, trouble calls have increased from the times of the classic mechanical, or dial combination safe locks. More often than not, electronic safe locks malfunction due to the complexity of that technology, quite often leaving the lock inoperable. Added to that is the environmental impact on those safe locks, such as fast food restaurants where humidity significantly impacts the electronics of the safe lock.

Most safe lock problems are solved without damaging the safe door and lock by simple battery or keypad replacement or by other minimally intrusive means. But when the lock itself has catastrophically malfunctioned, strategically drilling into the safe is the last and only option. Repair of the drilled hole is possible, and in most cases that area becomes even more difficult to drill in the future.
